Abstract :
ThePebbleBedModularReactor(PBMR)beingdevelopedbyEskomandpartnersinSouthAfrica,hasbeenunderdevelopmentsince1994.Intheprocess,itwasfoundnecessarytoincreasetheunitpowerinordertostaywithinthecommercialtargetssetfortheproject.Thiswasdoneinsuccessivestepswherebythebasicinherentsafetycharacteristicswerealwayskeptuppermostinmind.TheconceptualdesignhasmovedfromacopyoftheHTR-ModuldevelopedinGermanytoadirectgascycledesignutilisingtheBraytoncycle.Intheprocessofupgradingtheoutputpower,thedesignfirstadoptedanannularcorewithadynamiccentrecolumn,whichwasrecentlyreplacedbyasolidcentrereflector.Thisdesignchangeallowsathermalreactorpowerof400MWandkeepstheoperatingfueltemperaturebelow1130°Cforlowfissionproductcontaminationoftheturbines.Atthesametime,thegeometryofthecorestructureswaskeptsuchthatpassivecoolingtotheenvironmentkeepsmaximumfueltemperaturesoftheTRISO-coatedparticlefuelwithinthesafelimitsasprovenwithpredecessorreactorsliketheAVR.
