Abstract :
Thescalingofthermalhydraulicsystemsisofgreatimportanceinthedevelopmentofexperimentsinlaboratory-scaletestfacilitiesthatareusedtoreplicatetheresponseoffull-sizeprototypicaldesigns.Oneparticularprocessthatisofinterestinexperimentalmodelingisthequenchfrontthatdevelopsduringtherefloodphaseinapressurizedwaterreactor(PWR)followingalarge-breaklossofcoolantaccident(LOCA).Thepurposeofthisstudyistodevelopascalingmethodologysuchthattheprototypicalquenchfrontrelatedphenomenasuchastheentrainmentofliquiddropletscanbepreservedinalaboratory-scaletestfacilitywhichmayhavematerial,geometrical,fluid,andflowdifferencesascomparedtotheprototypicalcase.AmassandenergybalanceonaLagrangianquenchfrontcontrolvolumealongwithtemporalscalingmethodsareutilizedindevelopingthequenchfrontscalinggroupsforaphenomena-specificsecond-tierscalinganalysis.AsamplecalculationispresentedcomparingthequenchfrontscalinggroupscalculatedforaprototypicalWestinghouse17×17PWRfueldesignandthatofthegeometryandmaterialconfigurationusedintheFLECHT-SEASETseriesofexperiments.
