Abstract :
TheIdahoNationalEngineeringandEnvironmentalLaboratory(INEEL)andtheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MIT)areinvestigatingthesuitabilityofleadorlead–bismuthcooledfastreactorsforproducinglow-costelectricityaswellasforactinideburning.Thecurrentanalysisevaluatedapooltypedesignthatreliesonforcedcirculationoftheprimarycoolant,aconventionalsteampowerconversionsystem,andapassivedecayheatremovalsystem.TheATHENAcomputercodewasusedtosimulatevarioustransientswithoutreactorscram,includingaprimarycoolantpumptrip,astationblackout,andastepreactivityinsertion.Thereactordesignsuccessfullymetidentifiedtemperaturelimitsforeachofthetransientsanalyzed.
