Abstract :
Amathematicalmodelhasbeendevelopedtostudytheflowpatterntransitioninstabilitywhichmayoccurinaboilingtwo-phasesystem.Themodelconsidersflowpatterntransitioncriteriaforverticalupwardandhorizontalflowinpipestoidentifytheflowpatterntransitionandflowpatternspecificpressuredropmodels.Italsoconsidersthedriftfluxmodeltoestimatethevoidfractioninthetwo-phaseregion.Themodelhasbeenappliedtopredicttheflowpatterntransitioninstabilityinanaturalcirculationheavywatermoderatedboilinglightwatercooledreactor.ItisfoundthattheinstabilitycharacteristicsissimilartothatoftheLedinegg-typeinstability.However,thenumberofmultiplesteadystatesforagivenoperatingpowercanbemuchlargerintheflowpatterntransitioninstabilityascomparedtothatoftheLedinegg-typeinstability.StabilitymapswereplottedandcomparedforboththeflowpatterntransitioninstabilityandthatoftheLedinegg-typeinstability.Theinfluenceofvariousgeometricandoperatingparametersonthisinstabilitywereinvestigated.
