Abstract :
ThispaperpresentsexperimentalvalidationofthereferencestressbasedJestimatesforcircumferentialthrough-wallcracked(TWC)pipes,recentlyproposedbytheauthors.UsingthepipetestdataforcircumferentialTWCpipesgiveninthePipeFractureEncyclopedia[PipeFractureTestData,vol.3,Battelle,1997],thepredictedfractureinitiationandinstabilityloadsaccordingtotheproposedreferencestressmethodarecomparedwithexperimentalonesaswellaspredictionsaccordingtothereferencestressmethodembeddedinR6.TheresultsshowthatboththeR6methodandtheproposedmethodgiveconservativeestimatesofinitiationandmaximummomentsforcircumferentialTWCpipes,comparedtoexperimentaldata.Forlongercracks,theproposedmethodreducestheconservatismembeddedintheestimatedJaccordingtotheR6method,andtheresultingpredictionsarelessconservative,comparedtothosefromtheR6method.Forshortercracks,ontheotherhand,theproposedmethodreducespossiblenon-conservatismembeddedinestimatedJaccordingtotheR6method,andtheresultingpredictionsareslightlymoreconservative.
