I2releasedfromfuelintheeventofaseverenuclearreactoraccidenthastheabilitytodepositonsurfacesinthecontainmentbuilding.ThisstudyhasfocusedonthereactionsofI2withreactivemetalsavailableinthecontainment.Theexperimentshavebeenperformedunderconditionssimilartothoseinaboilingwaterreactoratanaccidentsituation.Copper,zincandaluminiumshowedextensiveuptakeofgaseousI2underhumidconditions.Reactionratesweredeterminedat25,50and70°CandcouldbeusedforquantifyingtheeffectofreactionsbetweengaseousI2andcopper,zincandaluminium.
ExperimentswiththemetalsplacedinwatershowedlowerI2uptake.ZinciodideandaluminiumiodiderapidlydissolvesinwaterandnouptakeofI2onthesesurfacescouldbeverified.CopperiodidehaslowsolubilityandI2wasadsorbedonthesurface.
Experimentsperformedwithreactivemetalsandmethyliodideshowedaminoruptakeofmethyliodideonzincandaluminiuminthegasphasefortemperaturesupto80°C.Acontinuousuptakeofmethyliodideoncopperwasmeasuredat80°C.
