Abstract :
Materialsusedforhightemperaturecomponentsinnuclearpowergeneration,aerospace,chemicalandprocessplantsundergochangesintheirmicrostructureduringoperationinserviceleadingtodegradationintheirmechanicalproperties.Monitoringtheprogressivechangesinthemechanicalpropertiesisveryimportantfromthepointofviewofensuringthestructuralintegrityofthecomponentsandalsoforpossibleextensionoftheirusefulservicelife.Nondestructivemethodsfordirectlyevaluatingthemechanicalpropertiesarerequiredforthesuccessofanymaterialsagingandlifemanagementprogram.Inthispaper,wedescribeaninnovativeautomatedtechniquebasedonballindentationthatcanbeusedforlaboratoryandfieldapplicationsinordertomeasurethemechanicalandfracturepropertiesofmaterials.Typicalresultsfromlaboratorystudiesonengineeringmaterialsarealsopresented.
