Abstract :
JapanAtomicEnergyResearchInstitute(JAERI)hasbeendesigningJapan’soriginalgasturbinehightemperaturereactor,GasTurbineHighTemperatureReactor300(GTHTR300).ThegreatlysimplifieddesignbasedonsalientfeaturesoftheHighTemperatureGas-cooledReactor(HTGR)withaclosedheliumgasturbineenablestheGTHTR300ahighlyefficientandeconomicallycompetitivereactortobedeployedinearly2010s.Also,theGTHTR300fullytakingadvantageofvariousexperiencesaccumulatedindesign,constructionandoperationoftheHighTemperatureEngineeringTestReactor(HTTR)andexistingfossilfiredgasturbinesystemsreducestechnologicaldevelopmentconcerningareactorsystemandelectricgenerationsystem.Originaldesignfeaturesofthissystemarethereactorcoredesignbasedonanewlyproposedrefuelingschemenamedsandwichshuffling,conventionalsteelmaterialusageforareactorpressurevessel(RPV),aninnovativecoolantflowschemeandahorizontallyinstalledgasturbineunit.TheGTHTR300canbecontinuouslyoperatedwithouttherefuelingfor2years.Duetothesesalientfeatures,thecapitalcostoftheGTHTR300islessthanatargetcostof200,000yen(1667US$)/kWe,andtheelectricgenerationcostisclosetoatargetcostof4yen(3.3UScents)/kWh.
