Abstract :
Thispaperanalyzestheinteractionofexternalsemi-ellipticalsurfacecrackandembeddedellipticalcrackinalongitudinalplaneofapressurizedcylinder.Nonumericalsolutionappearstobeavailableintheliteraturesofar.Theanalyzedratiosofthecrackdepthtocracklength(bS/aSandbE/aE)are0.25and1.0;thedistancebetweenbothcracks(s1/bmin)rangesfrom0.5to2.0.Intotal24crackconfigurationsareanalyzedandthestressintensityfactorsalongthecrackfrontarepresented.Thenumericalresultsshowthattheinteractionmakesthestressintensityfactorsalongthecrackfrontsincreasedforboththesurfacecrackandtheembeddedcrack,comparedwiththesinglesurfacecrackandsingleembeddedcrack.Forthegivencracksizes,thestressintensityfactorsforboththesurfacecrackandembeddedcrackincreasewiththedecreaseofthedistancebetweentwocracks.Thenumericalanalysesarecarriedoutbythehybridboundaryelementmethod.
