Abstract
JapanAtomicEnergyResearchInstitute(JAERI)hasbeenconductingR&Donthermochemicalhydrogenproductionusingthewater-splittingiodine–sulfurprocess,aspartoftheresearchprogramsstrivingtoutilizeheatfromahightemperaturegas-cooledreactor(HTGR).TheR&Discurrentlyatthebench-scalestageandcoversseveralfieldsincludingtheevaluationofstructuralmaterialsincorrosionenvironments,theimprovementinthermalefficiencyandthetechniquesforanoperationinaclosed-loopcontinuoushydrogenproduction.PreliminaryexperimentalexaminationswerecarriedouttoinvestigatecompositionsofthesolutionsfortheBunsenreaction,onwhichtheoperationisbased.Anexperimentalfacilitymadeofglassandfluorineresinforaclosed-loopcontinuoushydrogenproductionhasbeenoperated.Intheexperiment,hydrogenproductionattherateof32l/hfor20hwassuccessfullyaccomplished.Feasibilityoftheoperatingstabilitywasalmostdemonstrated.Hereafter,automationoftheoperationtomaintaintheprocessinastablestateisoneofthechallenges.
