Abstract :
Researchanddevelopment(R&D)ofhydrogenproductionsystemsusinghigh-temperaturegas-cooledreactors(HTGR)arebeingconductedbytheJapanAtomicResearchInstitute(JAERI).Todevelopthesystems,superiorhydrogenproductionmethodsareessential.Thethermochemicalhydrogenproductioncycle,theIS(iodine–sulfur)process,isaprospectivecandidate,inwhichheatsuppliedbyHTGRcanbeconsumedforthethermaldrivingload.Withthisattractivefeature,JAERIwillconductpilot-scaletests,aimingtoestablishtechnicalbasesforpracticalplantdesignsusingHTGR.Thehydrogenwillbeproducedatamaximumrateof30m3/h,continuouslyusinghigh-temperatureheliumgassuppliedbyaheliumgasloop,withanelectricheaterofabout400kW.Theplantwillemployanadvancedhydroiodicacid-processingdeviceforefficienthydrogenproduction,andtheusefulnessofthedevicewasconfirmedfrommassandheatbalanceanalysis.Throughdesignworksandthehydrogenproductiontests,valuabledataforconstructionandoperationwillbeacquiredtoevaluatedetailedprocessperformanceforpracticalsystems.Aftercompletingthepilot-scaletests,JAERIwillmoveontothenextR&Dstep,whichwillbedemonstrationsoftheISprocesstowhichheatissuppliedfromahigh-temperatureengineeringtestreactor(HTTR).
