Abstract
AdatasetoffivetransientsatdifferentVVERtypenuclearpowerplantswascollectedinordertovalidateneutronkinetics/thermalhydraulicscodes.Twoofthesetransients‘dropofcontrolrodatnominalpoweratBohunice-3’ofVVER-440typeand‘coast-downof1from3workingMCPsatKozloduy-6’ofVVER-1000type,werethenutilisedforcodevalidation.Eightinstitutescontributedtothevalidationwith10calculationsusing5differentcombinationsofcoupledcodes.ThethermalhydrauliccodeswereATHLET,SMABREandRELAP5andtheneutronkineticcodesDYN3D,HEXTRAN,KIKO3DandBIPR8.Thegeneralbehaviourofboththetransientswasquitewellcalculatedwithallthecodes.Evenanelementarymodellingofcoolantmixinginreactorpressurevesselunderasymmetrictransientsimprovedcorrespondencetothemeasurements.SomedifferencesbetweenthecalculationsseemtoindicatethatfuelmodellingandtreatmentofVVER-440controlrodsneedfurtherconsideration.Thesimultaneousvalidationinteractedwiththedatacollectioneffortandthusimproveditsquality.Thecomplexityofdatacollectionsystemsandsometimesconflictingdata,however,calledforcompromisesandinterpretationguidesthatalsotaughttheanalystsbalancedplantmodelling.
