Abstract :
Fastbreedernuclearreactorsusedforpowergeneration,havefuelsubassembliesintheformofrodbundlesenclosedinsidetallhexagonalcavities.Eachsubassemblycanbeconsideredasaporousmediumwithinternalheatgeneration.Athree-dimensionalanalysisiscarriedoutheretoestimatetheheattransferduetonaturalconvection,insuchananisotropic,partiallyheatgeneratingporousmedium,whichcorrespondstothetypicalcaseofblockedflowinafuelsubassemblyinsidethereactorcore.Usingthefinitevolumetechnique,thetemperaturesatvariouslocationsinsidehexagonalcavityareobtained.Thesimulationsbythethree-dimensionalcodedevelopedarecomparedwiththeresultsofexperiments[Suresh,Ch.S.Y.,Sateesh,G.,Das,SaritK.,Venkateshan,S.P.,Rajan,M.,2004.Heattransferfromatotallyblockedfuelsubassemblyofaliquidmetalfastbreederreactor.Part1:Experimentalinvestigation.Nucl.Eng.Design,presentissue]conductedusingliquidsodiumastheheattransferfluid.Further,thecodeisusedtopredictthemaximumtemperatureintypicalliquidmetalfastbreederreactorstofindthepowerlevelwheretheliquidsodiumstartsboiling.Ithelpstodecidethepowerlevelforinitiationofmonitoringthetemperatureforthepurposeofreactorcontrol.
