Abstract
Researchoninnovativesafetysystemsforlightwaterreactorsaddressedtoheatremovalbyin-poolimmersedheatexchangers,ledtodesign,build-upandtestthePERSEOfacilityatSIETlaboratories.
TheresearchstartedwiththeCEA-ENEAproposalofimprovingtheGE-SBWRisolationcondensersystem,bymovingthetriggeringvalvefromthehighpressureprimarysideofthereactortothelowpressurepoolside.Anewconfigurationofthesystemwasdefinedwiththeheatexchangercontainedinasmallpool,connectedatbottomandtoptoalargewaterreservoirpool,thetriggeringvalvebeinglocatedonthepoolbottomconnectingpipe.
ENEAfundedthewholeactivitythatincludedthedefinitionandbuild-upofanewheatexchangerpool,onthebasisofthealreadyexistingPANTHERSIC-PCCfacility,atSIETlaboratories,andthenewplantrequirements.Theheatexchangerconnectionstothepressurevesselweremaintained.
Anexperimentalcampaignwasexecutedatfullscaleandfullthermal-hydraulicconditionsforinvestigatingthebehaviourandperformanceoftheplantinsteadyandunsteadyconditions.TheRelap5codewasutilisedduringallphasesoftheresearch:fortheheatexchangerpooldimensiondefinitionandfrompre-testandpost-testanalyses.TheCatharecodewasappliedtoofrompre-testandpost-testanalyses.
