Abstract :
Populationbalanceequationscombinedwithathree-dimensionaltwo-fluidmodelareemployedtopredictsubcooledboilingflowatlowpressureinaverticalannularchannel.TheMUltiple-SIze-Group(MUSIG)modelimplementedinCFX4.4isextendedtoaccountforthewallnucleationandcondensationinthesubcooledboilingregime.Amodelconsideringtheforcesactingondepartingbubblesattheheatedsurfaceisformulated.Thismodelprovidesthecapacityofcomplexanalysesonthebubblegrowthanddepartureforawiderangeofwallheatfluxesandflowconditions.
Comparisonofmodelpredictionsagainstlocalmeasurementsismadeforthevoidfraction,bubbleSautermeandiameterandgasandliquidvelocitiescoveringarangeofdifferentmassandheatfluxesandinletsubcoolings.Goodagreementisachievedwiththelocalradialvoidfraction,bubbleSautermeandiameterandliquidvelocityprofilesagainstmeasurements.However,significantweaknessofthemodelisevidencedinthepredictionofthevapourvelocity.WorkisinprogresstocircumventthedeficiencyoftheMUSIGboilingmodelbytheconsiderationofadditionalmomentumequationstobetterrepresentthemomentumforcesactingontherangeofbubblesizesinthebulksubcooledliquid.
