Abstract :
Thispaperisconcernedwiththedevelopmentofafirst-principletheoreticalmethodtoexplainthedependenceofcontactangleonthesizeofliquiddropletsonsmoothsolidsubstrates.Ithasbeenshownthatthecontactangleforaxisymmetricdropletsissize-dependentand,consequently,cannotsatisfytheoriginalYoungequation.However,thiscontactanglecanbetheoreticallydeducedforanydropletmaterialandmassasafunctionoftheasymptoticcontactangle(thelimitingvalueofthecontactangleasdropletsizedecreases).Theproposedapproachisbasedonthefactthatthetwomajorforcesactingonadroplet,thatis,thesurfaceforceandthegravityforce,areindependentofeachother.Ithasbeendemonstratedthatforsessiledropletsonsmoothsurfaces,thecontactanglecanbeuniquelydeterminedforgivendropletmass(orvolume)andliquid/solid/gasproperties.
