Abstract
Experimentswereconductedtoinvestigatetwo-phaseflowinstabilitiesduetoflashinginaboilingnaturalcirculationloopwithachimneyatlowpressure.TheSIRIUS-Nfacilitywasdesignedtohavenon-dimensionalvaluesnearlyequaltothoseoftypicalnaturalcirculationboilingwaterreactor(BWR).
Theobservedinstabilityissuggestedtobeflashing-induceddensitywaveoscillations,sincetheoscillationperiodcorrelatedwellwiththepassingtimeofsingle-phaseliquidinthechimneysectionregardlessofsystempressure,heatflux,andinletsubcooling.
Stabilitymapswereobtainedinreferencetotheinletsubcoolingandtheheatfluxatthesystempressuresof0.1,0.2,0.35,and0.5 MPa.Theflowbecamestablebelowacertainheatfluxregardlessofthechannelinletsubcooling.Thestableregionenlargedwithincreasingsystempressure.Thus,thestabilitymarginbecomeslargerinastartupprocessofareactorbypressurizingthereactorsufficientlybeforeheatingaccordingtothestabilitymap.
