Abstract
Feedwaterheatersofmanynuclearpowerplantshaverecentlyexperiencedseverewallthinningdamage,whichacceleratesastheoperationprogresses.SeveralnuclearpowerplantsinKoreahaveundergonethisdamagearoundtheimpingementbaffle–installeddownstreamofthehigh-pressureturbineextractionsteamline–insidenumbers5Aand5Bfeedwaterheaters.Atthatpoint,theextractedsteamfromthehigh-pressureturbineconsistsintheformoftwo-phasefluidathightemperature,highpressureandhighvelocity.Sinceitflowsinreversedirectionafterimpingingtheimpingementbaffle,theshellwallofnumber5high-pressurefeedwaterheatermaybeaffectedbyflow-acceleratedcorrosion.ThispaperdescribesthecomparisonsbetweenthenumericalanalysisresultsusingtheFLUENTcodeandthedownscaledexperimentaldatainanefforttodeterminerootcausesoftheshellwallthinningofthehigh-pressurefeedwaterheaters.Thenumericalanalysisandexperimentaldatawerealsoconfirmedbytheactualwallthicknessmeasuredbyultrasonictests.Fromthecomparisonoftheresultsforthelocalvelocityprofilesandthewallthinningmeasurements,thelocalvelocitycomponentonlyinthey-directionflowingverticallytotheshellwall,andnotinthex-andz-directions,wasanalogoustothewallthinningdata.
