Abstract :
ToneutronchoppersatOakRidgeNationalLaboratoryʹsSpallationNeutronSourcewillstoppromptpulsesofhigh-energyneutronsoutsidethetargetmoderator.Choppersarecooledinternallybyrecirculateddistilledwatermaintainedat15°C.Numerousmetalliccomponentsareusedtofabricatethechoppersandcoolingsystem;watercontactsmanyofthesecomponents,establishingacorrosioncell.Tochoppersystemcorrosionproductswereinvestigatedanalytically.Resultsshowedelevatedconcentrationsofsolubleandprecipitatedironandcopperincoolingwater.Achemical-basedcorrosionstrategywasimplementedinaTochoppersystemduringmechanicaltestsnotinvolvingsystemirradiation.Chemicalanalysesshowedthatachemicalcorrosioninhibitorstoppedsystemcorrosionfor6monthsafteritsintroduction.Corrosioncessationwasbeneficial,asmechanicaltestswereperformedwithoutinterruptionfromprecipitatewearonmechanicalparts,flowmeterblockage,oradecreaseinheattransfercapabilities.Aqueouschemicalchangesoccurringinthecoolingsystemuponinhibitoradditionarediscussed.
