Abstract :
Heattransferandotherequipmentmountedonoff-shoreplatformsmaybesubjectedtolowfrequencyoscillations.Theeffectoftheseoscillations,typicallyinthefrequencyrangeof0.1–1Hz,ontheflowrateandpressuredropinaverticaltubehasbeenstudiedexperimentallyinthepresentwork.A1.75m-longverticaltubeofinnerdiameter0.016mwasmountedonaplateandthewholeplatewassubjectedtooscillationsintheverticalplaneusingamechanicalsimulatorcapableofprovidinglowfrequencyoscillationsintherangeof8–30cycles/minatanamplitudeof0.125m.TheeffectoftheoscillationsontheflowrateandthepressuredrophasbeenmeasuredsystematicallyintheReynoldsnumberrange500–6500.TheinducedflowratefluctuationswerefoundtobedependentontheReynoldsnumberwithstrongerfluctuationsatlowerReynoldsnumbers.Theeffectivefrictionfactor,basedonthemeanpressuredropandthemeanflowrate,wasalsofoundtobehigherthanexpected.CorrelationshavebeendevelopedtoquantifythisReynoldsnumberdependence.
