Abstract :
Inordertoensurethesafeoperationofthenuclearpowerplantsaccidentmanagementprogramsarebeingdevelopedaroundtheworld.Theseaccidentmanagementprogramscoverthewholespectrumofaccidents,includingsevereaccidents.AlotofworkisdonetoinvestigatethesevereaccidentphenomenaandimplementsevereaccidentmanagementinNPPswithvessel-typereactors,whilelessattentionispaidtochannel-typereactorsCANDUandRBMK. IgnalinaNPPwithRBMK-1500reactorhasimplementedsymptombasedemergencyoperationprocedures,whichcovermanagementofaccidentsuntilthecoredamageanddonotextendtocoredamageregion.InordertoensurecoverageofthewholespectrumofaccidentsandmeettherequirementsofIAEAthesevereaccidentmanagementguidelineshavetobedeveloped. ThispaperpresentsthebasicprinciplesandapproachtomanagementofbeyonddesignbasisaccidentsatIgnalinaNPP.Ingeneral,thisapproachcouldbeappliedtoNPPswithRBMK-1000reactorsthatareavailableinRussia,butthedesigndifferencesshouldbetakenintoaccount.
