Abstract :
Low-carbon316stainlesssteelwithmedium-nitrogen(316FR)isconsideredastheprincipalstructuralmaterialfornextgenerationfastbreederreactor(FBR)plantsinJapan.Thematerialstrengthstandardandthecreep-fatiguelifeevaluationmethodfor316FRhavebeendeveloped.However,theyarebasedontheresultsofmaterialtestsinair,whileactualstructuralmaterialwillbeusedmainlyinliquidsodiumenvironmentintheplants.Inordertoclarifytheenvironmentaleffect,cyclicbendingtestswerecarriedoutwithandwithoutholdtimeinsodium.Testedmaterialswere316FRandconventional304and316stainlesssteels.Weldmetalof316FRwasalsotested.Asaresult,itwasfoundthatfatigueandcreep-fatiguelivesof316FRinsodiumwerelargerthanthoseinairandnoexplicitconsiderationoftheenvironmentaleffectisnecessaryindesign.Itwasalsofoundthatthelifeevaluationmethodbasedontheductilityexhaustionconceptisapplicabletocreep-fatiguelifeassessmentinsodium.
