Abstract :
Two-andthree-dimensionalsimulationsofexperimentsonatmospheremixingandstratificationinanuclearpowerplantcontainmentwereperformedwiththecomputationalfluiddynamics(CFD)codeCFX4.4.ExperimentaldatawereobtainedfromtheInstitutdeRadioprotectionetdeSuretéNucléaire(France),whereexperimentsontheTOSQANfacilitywereperformed,andfromBeckerTechnologiesGmbH(Germany),whereexperimentsontheThAIfacilitywereperformed.Thefluidinsidethevesselswasmodeledasasingle-phasegasatmosphere,andsimplemodelsforsteamcondensationonstructuresandintheatmospherewereintroduced.ThepurposewastoassesstheapplicabilityoftheCFDapproachtosimulatethebehavioroflightgasesincontainmentsataccidentconditions.Thecomparisonsofexperimentalandsimulatedresultsshowthat,despiteatendencytosimulatemoreintensivemixing,theproposedapproachmayreplicatethestructureoftheatmospherereasonablywell.
