Abstract :
Thepresentpaperdealswiththeproblemofboroncarbidepelletoxidationwhichmightoccurduringasevereaccident.Abasiccorrelation,involvingglobalvariables,hasbeendevelopedforthesimulationofboroncarbideoxidationwiththeICARE/CATHAREcode.Thismodellinghasbeenbasedonavailableexperimentaldata,includingtheVERDIseparateeffectsexperimentsperformedbyIRSNatlowpressuresandhightemperatures.AccordingtotheagreementbetweenthemeasuredandthecalculatedbundletemperaturesaswellashydrogenreleaseandoxidizedB4C,theICARE/CATHAREcodesimulatesratherwellQUENCHexperimentsinvolvingB4Ccontrolroddegradation,Zircaloyoxidationunderstarvationandcoolingwithsteam.Basedonsimulationsresults,ithasbeennoticedthattheB4Cdegradationhasaslightdirecteffectonglobalbundledegradationbutanon-negligibleinfluenceonZircaloyoxidationthroughpowerrelease,materialmeltingandflowingdown.
