Abstract
ControlofwatermassinventoryinNuclearSteamGeneratorsisimportanttoinsuresufficientcoolingofthenuclearreactor.Sincedowncomerwaterlevelismeasurable,andareasonableindicationofwatermassinventorynearsteady-state,conventionalfeedwatercontrolsystemdesignsattempttomaintaindowncomerwaterlevelwithinarelativelynarrowoperationalband.However,downcomerwaterlevelcantemporarilyreactinareversemannertowatermassinventorychanges,commonlyknownasshrinkandswelleffects.Thesecomplicationsareaccentuatedduringstart-uporlowpowerconditions.Asaresult,automaticormanualcontrolofwaterlevelisdifficultandcanleadtohighreactortriprates.
