Abstract :
Thepaperreportstheresultsofastudyrelatedtotranspiratingflows,stimulatedbytheinterestthatthesephenomena,occurringinthepresenceofsimultaneousheatandmasstransfer,havefornuclearreactorapplications.Theworkincludesasummaryandthefollow-upofpreviousexperimentalandnumericalinvestigationsonfilmwisecondensationandfallingfilmevaporationandofarecentreviewofdifferentformsoftheheatandmasstransferanalogy.Theparticularobjectiveherepursuedistocomparetranspirationeffectsaspredictedbydifferentturbulencemodelswithclassicalsuctionandblowingmultipliersbasedonstagnantlayertheories,intheattempttoclarifytheirquantitativeimplicationsonthepredictedmasstransferrates. Acommercialandanin-houseCFDcodehavebeenadoptedforevaluatingtheheatandmasstransferratesoccurringoveraflatplateexposedtoanair-vapourstream,withuniformbulksteammassfractionandtemperatureboundaryconditionsatthewall.ThissimpleconfigurationwaspurposelyselectedsinceitisasimplifiedrepresentationofthetestsectionofanexperimentalfacilitypresentlyinoperationattheUniversityofPisa.ThisallowsadirectcomparisonbetweentheheatandmasstransfercoefficientspredictedbyCFDmodelsandclassicalcorrelationsforNusseltandSherwoodnumbers.
