Abstract :
Intermediateheatexchanger(IHX)inapool-typeliquidmetalcooledfastbreederreactorisanimportantheatexchangingcomponentasitformsanintermediateboundarybetweentheradioactiveprimarysodiuminthepoolandthenon-radioactivesecondarysodiuminthesteamgenerator(SG).Thethermalloadsduringsteadystateandtransientconditionsimposethermalstressesontheheatexchangertubesandontheshellswhichholdthetubebundle.EstimationofthesethermalloadsandachievinguniformtemperaturedistributioninthetubesandshellsbyhavinguniformflowdistributionsarethemajortasksofthermalhydraulicinvestigationsofIHX.Throughmulti-dimensionalthermalhydraulicinvestigationsperformedusingcommerciallyavailablecomputercodessuchasPHOENICS,theflowandtemperaturedistributionsinthetubesandshellsandinitssecondarysodiuminletandoutletheadersareobtainedwithandwithoutprovisionsofflowdistributiondevices.TheeffectivenessofthesedevicesinachievingacceptablyuniformflowandtemperaturedistributionshasbeenassessedandthermalloadsonthetubesandshellsforthermomechanicalanalysisoftheIHXhavebeendefined.Thepredictionsofthecomputationalstudieshavebeenvalidatedagainstsimulatedexperiments.
