Abstract :
Reactivityinitiatedaccident(RIA)testswith4unirradiatedZrbaseduraniummetalfuelrodswereperformedtoestablishacriterionwhichshouldbeobservedunderRIAconditions.Ofthefourtests,fuelfailureswereobservedinthetwoteststhatexperiencedthemaximumenergydepositionsof188and212cal/g,respectively.However,thefuelfailureswerenotobservedattheplaceofamaximumenergydepositionbutatthepositionwherethethermocoupleswereinstalled;onefailedatthepositionwhoselocalenergydepositionwas150cal/g,andtheotheroneattheplacewithenergydepositionof170cal/g.Thefuelfailuresseemtohaveoccurredbecauseexcessivepressure,whichwascausedbythepartialmeltingofthefuelmeat,wasappliedtothecladdingwithareducedthickness.However,otherpartsofthefuelrodsincludingtheplaceofamaximumenergydepositionmaintainedtheirintegrityandabigchangeinthetemperatureandpressureintheinternalcapsule,whichwouldbeanindicationofthefragmentationanddispersionofthefuelmeatintotheinternalcapsule,wasnotobserved.Visualinspectionalsoshowedthat,exceptforthethermocouplepositions,therewasnotraceofcladfailuresuchastheformationofbrittlecracksinthecladdingormeltingofthecladding.Therefore,fortheZrbaseduraniummetalfuelrods,itcanbeconcludedthatthethresholdenergydepositionabovewhichfragmentationanddispersionoffuelmeatintotheprimarycoolantsystemisexpectedtooccurcouldbehigherthan212cal/g.
