Abstract
Acontainmentscale-modeltest,performedatSandiaNationalLaboratories,wasloadedbyoverpressurizationandthefirstleakwasconcludedtobecausedbytearsinthesteellinerfoundneartheequipmenthatch.Thesetearswerelocatedinthevicinityoftheverticalfoldinbetweenthegeneralcurvedpartandtheembossment(verticalbendline).A3Dfiniteelementanalysisoftheregionneartheequipmenthatch,showsthathighlocalizedstrainswilldevelopinthevicinityofthebendline.Itisshownthatthelinerseparatesfromtheconcretewallnearthebendlinewhenthecontainmentexpands.Thetensionedlinerwillbeincontactwiththesurfaceoftheconcretewallingeneral,butneartheverticalbendlinethelinertendstobestraightenedout.Thisflexuralbehaviourcausehighstrainsintheweldlocatedinthebendline.Theactualpeakstrainlevelisdependingonthedetailedgeometryinthebendlineandthefailurestrainlevelofaweldedbiaxialstressedzoneisdifficulttodefine.However,theanalysispresentedinthispapershowsthattheflexuralbehaviourinthebendlinemostlikelycontributedtothelinertearsfoundinthescale-modeltest.Ageneralconclusionfromthestudypresentedinthispaperisthat,thenon-linearplasticbehaviourofthelinerisverysensitivetothedetaileddesignandtheinteractionbetweenthelinerandtheconcrete.
