Abstract
Thispaperpresentsanoveltechniquetostudythetwo-phaseflowfieldaroundanasymmetricobstructioninaverticalpipewithanominaldiameterofDN200.Mainfeatureoftheexperimentsistheshiftingofahalf-moonshapeddiaphragmcausingtheobstructionalongtheaxisofthepipe.Inthisway,the3Dvoidfieldisscannedwithastationarywire-meshsensorthatsuppliesdatawithaspatialresolutionof3mmoverthecross-sectionandameasuringfrequencyof2.5kHz.Besidesthemeasurementoftime-averagedvoidfractionfieldsandbubble-sizedistributions,noveldataevaluationmethodsweredevelopedtoextractestimatedliquidvelocityprofilesaswellaslateralcomponentsofbubblevelocitiesfromthewire-meshsensordata.Thecombinationofvoidfractionfieldsandvelocityprofilesoffertheopportunitytoanalyseatwo-phaseflowinageometrythatownsaseriesoffeaturescharacteristicforcomplexcomponentsofpowerandchemicalplantequipment.Suchcharacteristicsaresharpedgeswithflowseparation,recirculationareas,jetformation,stagnationpointsandcurvedstream-lines.
