Abstract :
AcomputermodelfortheMEGAwattPilotTargetExperiment(MEGAPIE)wasdeveloped,verifiedandappliedtotheanalysisofthereferenceaccident,resultingfromthehypotheticallossofaPb–Biinventoryandsubsequentcoolingdownofthetargetwithfreeconvectionoftheatmosphericair.Theradioactivityreleasescausedbyevaporationofactivationproductsfromthelead–bismuthfilmsonthesurfacesofthetargetinnerstructuresareestimated.Themaximumradioactivityreleaseswerefoundtobefromevaporationofthemercuryandpoloniumestimatedas7.0×1011and6.2×108Bq,respectively.Thermalconductivityandradiationheattransferthroughthegasgapswerefoundtobemoreimportantmechanismofthetargetcoolingdownthantheatmosphericairconvection.ThefinalconclusionmadeonthebasisoftheworkisthatMEGAPIEinthereferenceaccidentmeetsthe1mSvcriterion.
