Abstract :
Advancedboilingwaterreactor(ABWR)plantshaveachievedanexcellentoperatingperformancesincethefirstABWRplantstarteditscommercialoperationin1996.BasedontheABWRtechnology,progresshasbeenmadetowardsanextgenerationABWR,AB1600inToshiba.TheAB1600plantaimsatmeetingthedemandforthereplacementofthecurrentBWRs,whichisexpectedtoberealizedby2020andbeyond.IntheAB1600design,therefore,furtherimprovementsineconomicandreliabilityaspectshavebeenpursuedbyincorporatingseveralnewtechnologies.Thereactorpowerisupratedto1600MWefrom1350MWeofthefirstABWRplantinordertobenefitfromeconomyofscale.Alargefuelassemblywithhighpowerdensityisadoptedinordertoreducebothofthecapitalcostandmaintenancecostassociatedwithrefuelingbydecreasingthenumberoffuelassembliesandcontrolroddrives.TheAB1600safetysystemdesignemploysahybridsafetysystem,whichconsistsofbothactiveandpassivesystemsforthedesignbasisandthebeyond-designbasisaccidents,toenhancethesafetyoftheplant.Asacountermeasureagainstsevereaccidents,thepassivesystemsforthefunctionsofdecayheatremoval,coolantinjectionandmoltencoredebriscoolingareincorporated.
