Abstract :
Thetargetsystem,whosefunctionistosupplyanexternalneutronsourcetoasubcriticalcoreinordertosustaintheneutronchainreaction,isthemostcriticalpartofanADSbeingsubjecttoseverethermo-mechanicalloadingandmaterialdamageduetoacceleratorprotonsandfissionneutrons.
InordertoreducethematerialdamageandtoincreasethelifeofthetargetsystemawindowlessoptionwaschosenintheframeworkoftheEuropeanPDS-XADSprojectasreferenceconfigurationfortheexperimentalADScooledbylead–bismutheutecticalloy.
Thisdocumentdealswiththeresultsofthethermo-hydraulicanalysisperformedwithSTAR-CDandRELAP5codestoassessthebehaviourofthewindowlesstargetsystemduringoff-normaloperatingconditions.Italsoreportsadescriptionofmodificationsproperlyimplementedinthecodesforstudyingthiskindofplant.
Thewindowlesstargetsystemshowsasatisfactorythermo-hydraulicbehaviourfortheanalysedaccidents,exceptforthelossofbothpumpswithoutprotonbeamshut-offandforthebeamtripslastingmorethan1s.
