Abstract
Thereisasubstantialmarketfornuclearenergyinnon-electricapplicationssuchashydrogenproductionorwaterdesalination.AmongtheGenerationIVreactorconcepts,theveryhightemperaturereactor(VHTR)withareactoroutlettemperaturecloseto1000°Candapowerconversionefficiencyofapproximately50%isbelievedtobethemostsuitableconceptforco-generationofprocessheat.Itshighcoolantexergywouldenablecentralizedhydrogenproductionandotherprocessheatapplications.Inthispaperitisshownthatareactorwithlowercoolantoutlettemperatureoranothernear-termheatsourcecanalsomeettheVHTRobjectiveswhicharehighpowerconversionefficiencyandcapabilitytodeliverhightemperatureprocessheatinthenarrowtemperaturewindowrequiredbythermochemicalhydrogenproductioncycles.Theapproachwastoseparatetherequirementforhightemperatureprocessheatproductionfromthenuclearpartoftheplant,inotherwordsthenuclearpartofthepowerplantwouldrunatacceptablylowtemperaturewhilethehightemperatureheatproductionviaaheatpumpsystemwouldbelimitedtoaconventionalexternalcircuit,thusavoidingnuclearconstraints.TheseparationofthesehightemperatureconstraintsfromthereactorwouldavoidmassiveR&Drequirementsonmaterials,componentsandfuelwithuncertainoutcomethusunnecessarilydelayingintroductionofthisotherwiseveryattractivereactorconcept.
