Abstract :
Oneofthegeneralmethodstoevaluateafailureconditionistocompareamaximumstresswithanallowablestress.Afailureconditionforastressisusuallyappliedtoaconcernedpointratherthanaconcernedsection.Inanoptimizationprocedure,thesestressconditionsareappliedasconstraints.ButtheASMEcodethatprescribesitsgeneralrulesuponthedesignofaNSSS(nuclearsteamsupplysystem)hasquiteadifferentviewonafailurecondition.AccordingtotheASMEcodeSec.III,astresslinearizationshouldbeperformedtoevaluateafailureconditionofastructure.Sinceafewprogramsprovideaprocedureforastresslinearizationthroughapost-processingstage,anextracalculationofthelinearizedstressesandthederivativesofalinearizedstressareconductedtoadoptthestresslinearizationresultstoanoptimizationprocedureasconstraints.Inthisresearch,anoptimizationtechniquethatutilizestheresultsofastresslinearizationasaconstraintisproposed.Theproposedmethodwasappliedtotheshapedesignofaperforatedpressurevesselcover.
