Abstract :
Someoftheoutstandingissuesofthesevereaccidentareevaluatedfromthesynthesisoftheresultsfromtheresearchprogramsofthesimulationofnaturallyarrestedthermalattackinthevessel(SONATA),testforrealcoriuminteractionwithwater(TROI),andthetestfortheperformanceofaquenchingscreenforahydrogenburn.
Thestrategyoftheinvesselretention(IVR)byanexternalreactorvesselcooling(ERVC)isevaluatedfortheKoreaStandardNuclearPowerPlant(KSNP)andAdvancedPowerReactor-1400(APR-1400).ThefavorableandadverseeffectsoftheproposedstrategyandtheuncertaintiesoftherelevantphenomenaincludingthegapcoolingandheatremovalcapabilityoftheEVRCarediscussed.Itisshownthatthethermalmarginforthefailureofthereactorvesselischallengedforthesereactors.TheobservationoftheenergeticspontaneoussteamexplosionsintheTROIsuggeststhatpropermeasuresshouldbetakentoavoidand/orlessentheriskofanin-vesselorex-vesselsteamexplosion,whenweemployanex-vesselcoolingstrategyand/oraninvesselinjectionstrategy.
Toaddresstheissuethatmultipleburnsinducedbythehydrogenignitercanposeathreattothesafetyequipment,theuseofaquenchingscreenissuggested.Theresultsofthelaboratoryscaleexperimentsfortheperformanceofthequenchingscreenindicatedthefeasibilityofusingaquenchingscreentoprotecttheessentialequipmentbystoppingtheflamepropagation
