Abstract :
Unlinedreinforcedconcreteshearwallsareoftenusedas‘tertiaryboundaries’intheUnitedStatesDepartmentofEnergy(DOE)tohousedangerousgases.Anunanticipatedevent,suchasanearthquake,maycausegasesstoredinsidethewallstodisperseintotheenvironmentresultinginexcesspollution.Toaddressthisconcern,inthispaper,amethodologytonumericallypredictthegasleakageratethroughtheseshearwallsunderlateralloadingconditionsisproposed.Thismethodologyinvolvesfiniteelementandflowrateanalysis.Straindistributionsareobtainedfromthefiniteelementanalysis,andthenusedtosimulatethecrackcharacteristicsontheconcretespecimen.Theflowratethroughthedamagedconcretespecimenisthenestimatedusingflowrateformulasavailablefromtheliterature.Resultsfromanexperimentalspecimenareusedtoevaluatethemethodology,andparticularlyitsrobustnessintheflowrateestimation.
