Abstract :
Thisstudyisconcernedwithdevelopmentofacoupledcalculationmethodologywithwhichtocontinuallyandconsistentlyanalyzeprogressionofanaccidentfromthedesign-basisphaseviacoreuncoverytocoremeltingandrelocation.Experimentswereperformedtoinvestigatethecorecoolantinventorydepletionaftersafetyinjectionfailureduringalarge-breakloss-of-coolantaccidentinacoldlegutilizingtheSeoulNationalUniversityFacility(SNUF).TheSNUFisanintegraltestloopscaleddownto1/6.4inlengthand1/178inareafromtheAdvancedPowerReactor1400MWe(APR1400).TheSNUFtestsaresimulatedwiththeRELAP5/MOD3.3code.Thetestresultsrevealedthatthecorecoolantinventorydecreasedfivetimesfasterduringthesweepoutinthedowncomerthanafterterminationofthesweepout.Thesweepoutwasobservedtotakeplaceontopofspilloverfromthedowncomerregiontoexpeditethedepletionofthecorecoolantinventory.ThecalculationresultsofRELAP5/MOD3.3deviatedfromtheexperimentaldataintermsofentrainmentfromthesurfaceofcorecoolant,condensationandsweepoutinthedowncomer.Thereby,thecorecoolantlevelwascomputedtodecreasefasterthanthemeasuredfromtheexperimentduetotheoverestimatedspilloverbytheevaporationoftheentraineddropletsbytheuncoveredheaters.Notwithstandingtheoccasionaldisparities,thecodepredictionisinreasonableagreementwiththeoverallbehaviorofthetests.
