Abstract
Thepresentworkinvestigatesanappropriatewaytosolvetheproblemofoptimizingfuelmanagementinresearchreactors.Acomputerprogramhasbeendeveloped,toautomatethisprocedure.Theprogramsuggestsanoptimalcoreconfiguration,whichsatisfiestoestablishedsafetyconstraints.Thesuggestedsolutionwasbasedupontheuseofcoupledmethodsinwhichastochastictechnique,simulatedannealing,andanadaptiveback-propagationneuralnetworkareconnectedtoeachother.
Anobjectivefunctionwasdevelopedbasedontwoperformanceparameters:cyclelength,whichcanbedeterminedthroughtheevaluationoftheeffectivemultiplicationfactorKeffandpowerpeakingfactorPmax.ThesystemusesoptimizationofthesetwoparameterstofindsconfigurationsinwhichKeffismaximized,whetherapenaltyfunctionisappliedtolimitthevalueofPmaxwhichshouldbelowerthantheonegivenintheinitialconfiguration.
Aseriesoftestshavebeenperformedusingamodifiedcoreconfigurationofthebenchmark10MWIAEALEU(lowenricheduranium)researchreactorandtheresultachievedistheoptimumconfigurationofthestudiedcore.
