  • Abstract
    Itisknownfrominternationalfeedbackthattherotorshaftsoftheturbo-generatorswithdiskshrunktechnologymayhavetransversecrackslocatednearthekeyswhichmaintainthebondbetweenthecoreoftheshaftandthesurroundingdisksincaseofoverspeed.Itwasunderstoodthatthecrackswereinitiatedbyfrettingbetweenthekeysandtheshaftandthattheypropagatedduetoafatiguemechanismgeneratedbytherotationalflexionoftheshaftsundergravity.Thedestructiveobservationnowcorrelatedtotheservicehistoryoftheshaftshowsdifferentmixedmodespropagationphasesandastoppedcircumferentialcrackevolutionduringthelastmonthsofserviceoftheshaft.Mechanicalstudiesbasedonthedeterminationofthestressintensityfactorsprovidetheevolutionofthestressintensityfactorsduringthecrackpropagation.Theygiveaccesstoinformationnotavailableotherwisetoexplaintheobservedcrackprofiles.Finally,experimentalinvestigationsareneededtoobtainthekineticsasafunctionofthestressintensityfactors.Theinformationprovidedishelpfulindeterminingthepossiblecrackprofilestobedetectedbythemostsuitablevibratorysurveillancesystemsbeforefailureinserviceoftheshaftline.
