  • Abstract
    Pipinginnuclearpowerplantsisvitaltotheproperoperationandsafetyofthesefacilities.Toassuresafetyintheunlikelyeventofapipebreak,itisnecessarytoevaluatetheconsequencesfromtheresultingwhippingpipeonneighboringcomponentsandstructures.Numericalsimulationsallowforrapidevaluationoftheseconsequences.Beforesimulationscanbeaccepted,however,themethodologyandcomputercodesmustbevalidatedagainstexperimentalresults.Thispaperusesaprobabilisticapproachtovalidatepipewhipsimulationsagainstlimitedexperimentalresults.Probabilisticanalysissoftwarewasdevelopedandcoupledtoexistingdeterministicfiniteelementsoftware.Anexampleofawhippingpipeimpactingagainstareinforcedconcreteslabwassimulated.Thedescribedprobabilisticapproachwasusedtovalidatethenumericalsimulations.Theconclusionsobtainedwerethatthenumericalsimulationsofwhippingpipeimpactwerevalidated,eventhoughthenumericalresultsdidnotexactlyagreewithexperimentalresults.Thechosenpointsofcomparison–namely,time-to-impactandtotalreactionforce–werewithinthe95%confidenceinterval.
