Abstract :
Thehigh-temperaturegas-cooledreactor(HTGR)appearsasagoodcandidateforthenextgenerationofnuclearpowerplants.Inthe“HTR-N”projectoftheEuropeanUnionFifthFrameworkProgram,analyseshavebeenperformedonanumberofconceptualHTGRdesigns,derivedfromreferencepebble-bedandhexagonalblock-typeHTGRtypes.ItisshownthatseveralHTGRconceptsarequitepromisingassystemsfortheincinerationofplutoniumandpossiblyminoractinides. ThesestudiesweremainlyconcernedwiththeinvestigationandintercomparisonoftheplutoniumandactinideburningcapabilitiesofanumberofHTGRconceptsandassociatedfuelcycles,withemphasisontheuseofcivilplutoniumfromspentLWRuraniumfuel(firstgenerationPu)andfromspentLWRMOXfuel(secondgenerationPu).Besides,the“HTR-N”projectalsoincludedactivitiesconcerningthevalidationofcomputationaltoolsandthequalificationofmodels.Indeed,itisessentialthatvalidatedanalyticaltoolsareavailableintheEuropeannuclearcommunitytoperformconceptualdesignstudies,industrialcalculations(reloadcalculationsandtheassociatedcorefollow),safetyanalysesforlicensing,etc.,fornewfuelcyclesaimingatplutoniumandminoractinide(MA)incineration/transmutationwithoutmulti-reprocessingofthedischargedfuel. ThesevalidationandqualificationactivitieshavebeencentredroundthetwoHTGRsystemscurrentlyinoperation,viz.theHTR-10andtheHTTR.There-calculationoftheHTTRfirstcriticalitywithaMonteCarloneutrontransportcodenowyieldsacceptablecorrespondencewithexperimentaldata.Alsocalculationsby3Ddiffusiontheorycodesyieldacceptableresults.Specialattention,however,hastobegiventothemodellingofneutronstreamingeffects.FortheHTR-10theanalysesfocusedonfirstcriticality,temperaturecoefficientsandcontrolrodworth.Alsointhesestudiesagoodcorrespondencebetweencalculationandexperimentisobservedforthe3Ddiffusiontheorycodes.
