  • Abstract
    ThenuclearpowerprograminIndiaatpresentisbasedmainlyonaseriesofPressurizedHeavyWaterReactors(PHWRs).StartingfromRajasthanAtomicPowerStationcomprisingtwounitsof200MWeCanadiandesignedPHWRsin1973,theprogramhascomealongwaywith12PHWRunitsinoperationand6unitsunderconstructionwhichincludes2unitsof540MWePHWRs.NaroraAtomicPowerStationcommissionedin1991markedmajorindigenizationandstandardizationofPHWRdesigns.ThechoiceofPHWRsinthecurrentstageofIndiaʹsNuclearPowerPlantsprogramisbasedonlong-termobjectivesintherightavailableresourcesandinfrastructure.Thesereactorsusenaturaluraniumasfuelandheavywaterasmoderatorandcoolant.ThenuclearpowerstationsinIndiaaregenerallyplannedastwin-unitmodules,sharingcommonfacilitiessuchasservicebuilding,spentfuelbay,etc.
