Abstract :
ThesuccessofthethreestageIndiannuclearenergyprogramisinter-linkedwiththeestablishmentofanefficientclosedfuelcycleapproachwithrecyclingofbothfissileandfertilecomponentsofthespentfueltoappropriatereactorsystems.TheIndianreprocessingjourneywasstartedwaybackin1964withthecommissioningofaplantbasedonPUREXtechnologytoreprocessaluminumcladnaturaluraniumspentfuelfromtheresearchreactorCIRUS.Afterachievingthebasicskills,apowerreactorreprocessingfacilitywasbuilttoreprocessspentfuelfrompowerreactors.Adequatedesignandoperatingexperiencewasgainedfromthesetwoplantsformasteringthereprocessingtechnology.Thefirstplant,beingthemaidenventure,basedonindigenoustechnologyhadtoundergomanymodificationsduringitsoperationandfinallyneededrefurbishmentforcontinuedoperation.Decommissioninganddecontaminationofthisplantwascarriedoutmeticulouslytoallowunrestrictedaccesstothecellsforfreshinstallation.Athirdplantwasbuiltforpowerreactorspentfuelreprocessingtoserveasadesignstandardforfutureplantswiththeinvolvementofindustry.Overtheyears,spentfuelreprocessingbasedonPUREXtechnologyhasreachedamaturedstatusandcanbesafelydeployedtomeettheadditionalreprocessingrequirementstocatertotheexpandingnuclearenergyprogram.Sidebysidewiththedevelopmentsinthespentnaturaluraniumfuelreprocessing,irradiatedthoriareprocessingisalsoperusedtodevelopTHOREXintoarobustprocess.Theadditionalchallengesinthisdomainarebeingaddressedtoevolveappropriatetechnologicalsolutions.Advancementsinthefieldofscienceandtechnologyarebeingabsorbedtomeetthechallengesofhigherrecoverycombinedwithreducedexposureandenvironmentaldischarges.
