Abstract :
Cirus,a40MWt,verticaltanktyperesearchreactor,havingwiderangeofresearchfacilities,wascommissionedintheyear1960.Thisresearchreactor,situatedatMumbai,Indiahasbeenoperatedandutilizedextensivelyforisotopeproduction,materialtestingandneutronbeamresearchfornearlyfourdecades.Withaviewtoassesstheresiduallifeofthereactor,detailedageingstudieswerecarriedoutduringtheearly1990s.Basedonthesestudies,refurbishmentofCirusforitslifeextensionwastakenup.Duringrefurbishment,additionalsafetyfeatureswereincorporatedinvarioussystemstoqualifythemforthecurrentsafetystandards.Thispapergivesthedetailsoftheoperatingexperiences,utilizationofthereactoralongwithmethodologiesfollowedforcarryingoutdetailedageingstudies,refurbishmentandsafetyupgradationforitslifeextension.
