Abstract :
Indiahasamoderateuraniumreserveandalargethoriumreserve.Theprimaryenergyresourceforelectricitygenerationinthecountryiscoal.Thepotentialofotherresourceslikegas,oil,wind,solarandbiomassisverylimited.Theonlyviableandsustainableresourceisthenuclearenergy.Presently,PressurisedHeavyWaterReactorsutilizingnaturaluraniumareinoperation/underconstructionandtheplutoniumgeneratedfromthesereactorswillbemultipliedthroughbreedinginfastbreederreactors.Thesuccessfulconstruction,commissioningandoperationofFastBreederTestReactoratKalpakkamhasgivenconfidencetoembarkontheconstructionofthePrototypeFastBreederReactor(PFBR).ThispaperdescribesthesalientdesignfeaturesofPFBRincludingthedesignofthereactorcore,reactorassembly,mainheattransportsystems,componenthandling,steamwatersystem,electricalpowersystems,instrumentationandcontrol,plantlayout,safetyandresearchanddevelopment.
