  • Abstract
    KAMINIisa30kW,233UfuelledresearchreactorlocatedatIndiraGandhiCentreforAtomicResearch(IGCAR),Kalpakkam.Thereactorfunctionsasaneutronsourcewithafluxof1012n/cm2/satthecorecenter. KAMINIusesplatetypeoffuelinareactortank.Demineralizedwaterisusedasmoderator,biologicalshieldandcoolant.ReflectorsaremadeofberylliumoxidewithZircaloy-2sheath.Cadmiumisusedastheabsorbermaterialinthesafetycontrolplates(SCP)providedforpowercontrolandshutdownofthereactor. Therearethreebeamtubesandthreeirradiationlocationswithinthereactortankfacilitatingneutronradiographyofradioactiveandnon-radioactiveobjects,sampleirradiationforneutronactivationanalysis,physicsandshieldingexperiments.ThereactorattainedfirstcriticalityinOctober1996andnominalpowerof30kWinSeptember1997. Thisarticlecoversthedesigndescription,facilitiesavailableforexperimentsandtheirutilizationforresearchanddevelopment.SevenyearsofoperatingexperienceofKAMINI,whichistheonlyreactorusing233Uasfuel,arealsohighlighted.
