Abstract :
ConcernfortheenvironmentandestablishmentofradiationprotectiongoalshavebeenamongthemajorprioritiesinplanningofIndiaʹsnuclearenergyprogramme.IntheIndiannuclearfuelcycle,rightfrominception,aclosedloopoptionhasbeenadoptedwherespentfuelisreprocessedtorecoverplutoniumandunuseduranium.Theemphasishasbeentorecoveractinides,individualfissionproductsandrecyclethembacktothefuelcycleorusethemforvariousindustrialapplications.Thedevelopmentofinnovativetreatmentprocessesforlowandintermediatelevelwastesinrecenttimeshasfocusedonvolumereductionasoneofthemainobjectives.Inthecaseofhigh-levelliquidwaste,vitrificationinborosilicatematrixisbeingpracticedusinginductionheatedmetallicmeltersatindustrialscaleplantsatTarapurandTrombay.
