Abstract :
Nuclearpowerhasanoverwhelmingpotentialtomeetthedemandsofanenergyhungryworldwhileprotectingtheenvironment.However,therenaissanceofnuclearenergywillonlybecometruewhenthepubliccanbeconvincedthatnuclearpowerplantsaresafeandthatastrongsafetycultureexistsaroundtheglobe.WhiletheoverallsafetyperformanceoftheworldʹspowerplantshadbeensteadilyimprovedaftertheshockofChernobyl,unfortunately,theoverallplantavailabilityhaslevelledoffinthelastfewyears.ThemainreasonforthisisfoundinacomplacencytowardnuclearsafetyissueswhichcanbelinkedtothearrivalofnewCEOsinthenuclearindustrywho–alltoooften–havenonuclearbackgroundandwhomanagenuclearpowerplantsinthesamewaytheywouldmanageanyotherindustrialplants–beingnotatallawareofthenecessityofaveryspecialandverysensitivesafetycultureofnuclearinstallations.
