Abstract :
Thecoolabilityoffragmentedcoriumisamajorissueinreactorsafety.Sincethelong-termcoolabilityofsuchparticlebedsislimitedbytheavailabilityofcoolantinsidethebedandnotbyheattransferlimitationsfromtheparticlestothecoolant,thepressurefieldinsidethedebrishasastrongeffectonthecoolingpotentialinmulti-dimensionalcasesasexpectedinsevereaccidentsinlightwaterreactors(LWR).Therefore,thedeterminationofthepressurefieldfortwo-phaseflowsinporousmediaisonecentralpointofinterest.
Inthiscontextsimulationmodelsandinparticulardryoutmodelsweredevelopedforreactorsafetyanalyseswhichhavetobevalidatedbyreliableexperimentaldata.Therefore,basicexperimentalinvestigationshavebeencarriedoutwithinductivelyheatedsteelballsof6or3mmdiametertoprovideadatabaseforthevalidationandmodificationofthefrictionlawsincludedinthesedryoutmodels.
Theperformedboilinganddryoutexperimentsshowclearlythatmodelswithouttheexplicitconsiderationoftheinterfacialdragcannotpredictthepressuredistributioninsideaboilingparticlebed,notevenqualitatively.Againstit,modelswithanexplicitconsiderationoftheinterfacialdragcandescribethedistributionofpressureinsideaboilingparticlebed.
